Thornlie First Grade Minor Premiers 16/17

This weekend was the end of the regular season and as the headline states our first grade side finished the regular season on top of the ladder. A magnificent achievement for the teams first year back in the top flight. Now for the business end of the season where we want to pull off what was the unthinkable at the start of the year and put a flag on the wall in the Den for first grade. Here’s how the last games panned out.

Top side were returning to the home of cricket to attempt to chase down Bicton Attadale’s 166. In a horrendous start to the run chase and hopes of finishing on top our boys were 5 for 4 and ended up being bundled out for a lowly 44 which unfortunately featured 6 ducks. Only Dan Pryor provided any resistance to Bictons attack who managed 20 including 2 sixes. We were sent back in to bat by the visitors who were now chasing an outright victory but the Lions weren’t going to make the same mistake twice and managed a much improved effort with the bat second time around and finished at 4/193. Zanno hitting a brilliant 92 (four sixes), Dave Downey 44 and Matty Irwin retiring on 25. The spy had already been sent to Leeming to check how they were going and reported back that Armadale had rolled them for 187 meaning the mighty Lions had done enough to hold onto top place This now sets up a mouth watering home semi final against Armadale next week.

Fourth grade rounded out a disappointing season at Hume Rd against Piara Waters having been bowled out for 97 in the first week. Piara resumed on 4/90 and ended up declaring on 9/194.Two wickets each to Ledders (59), Scoops (35), Liam Adams (39) and Foxy (13). We were sent back in and this time we were dismissed for 46 with the Piara opening bowlers doing the damage. A very tough year for our fourth grade side who struggled with players wanting to commit to two day cricket, so to captain Ledders and all the regulars in that side I commend you on your efforts to stick at it and hopefully you all find some success next season in which ever grade you end up in.

One Day A headed down the freeway to summer (safety) bay needing to win well to have any chance of securing a home final next week. Losing the toss and fielding our boys ended up bowling the home side out for 180 with Jacko 3-32 (almost got it Jacko), Smithy 3-53 and Glen Moore 2-18. In reply our boys never really got going as Safety Bay’s bowlers got on top and a couple of run outs didn’t help our cause. We were bowled out for 110 with Dansol the only batsman to get amongst the runs scoring 30 including 3 sixes. Disappointing loss for our boys who ended up finishing third and will now travel to Coker Park next week to take on Cannington in a semi final.

The D train headed to Sutherlands to take on Piara Waters having already wrapped up top spot on the ladder. Piara needing to win to remain in fourth spot and play us again next week dropped a couple of players down to help their cause. Batting first (twice in 2 weeks now) we got a steady start with father and son opening the batting Mike & Mitch Irwin. Mitch batting very well in his first senior game for the club helping himself to 40 before being run out, S Marr managed 23 batting at 3, skipper Urby 22, Tosh a very handy quick fire 21 at the end but the batting highlight for me was Davros who ended up being unbeaten on 30 for his highest score. We got off to a great start with the ball thanks to another father son duo this time the Pollers Gav (2-14) & Mitch (3-40) . Having Piara 5/35 and being well on top Piara dug in and put together a couple of partnerships mainly due to one player who batted really well hitting 91. The game was going down to the wire with the home side 7/163 and the overs not being an issue when the danger man was dismissed, 8-189 needing 5 more runs before Jedi came to the rescue and claimed 3-14 to dismiss Piara for 190 in a fantastic game which ended the hopes of a return game next week as Tamil beat Kenwick to claim fourth spot and a semi final berth next week against us.

The G bangers headed to Alan Edwards reserve to play Kardinya minus the Holmes boys as Curtis was playing a semi final already in junior district. Bowling first we restricted the home side to 101 with Kenny Crook bowling very well with 2-9 off his 7, Kev Attree also grabbing 2-15 and there was some other very handy efforts. In reply our boys lost a couple of early wickets but then steadied to coast to 8/112 off 26 overs where they called it quits and had early beers as they were cemented in 2nd spot and couldn’t improve. Big Kev at it again hitting 35 and Kev Crudelli managed 20 as the Lions rounded off their preparation for the finals where they will play a home semi final next week against Cockburn 1.
