The first week of finals provided some mixed results with our 2 top teams unfortunately bowing out in the semi finals and the bottom two teams D’s & G’s going through to the grand final. A good crowd turned out on Sunday at the home of cricket to watch the top side battle it out with Armadale for a spot in the big dance and although most were disappointed with the result they certainly weren't disappointed with the endeavour and effort of our top side which will be a force to be reckoned with again next season. Here’s how the weekend results went. As already mentioned the top side were at the home of cricket against Armadale and after losing the toss and being sent in made a steady start before a succession of wickets had us reeling at 6 for 56. A 40 run partnership for the 7th wicket got us started again before another 81 run stand for the 8th wicket got us to a competitive total of 176, with skipper Benny Harris hitting 42 and Scuba Steve Hansen batting aggressively and successfully at 9 hitting a fantastic 62. Being bowled out in the 64th over meant we got a few overs at Armadale late in the day and at stumps they were 1/16. So back to Berehaven on Sunday for day 2 with the weather much more suitable with the sun out for the big crowd to enjoy a few beverages and watch the action. Armadale made a patient start before we got a double breakthrough with the score on 36. 4 for 64 became 5 for 102 and 6 for 108 before Armadale knuckled down and put on 47 for the 7th wicket and from there they were unfortunately able to get the target required to advance through to next weeks grand final and end the hopes of the brave Lions outfit that had come from nowhere in First grade this first year to really gain some respect. Jenks again put in a huge effort bowling 32 overs finishing with 3/57 and Dale also bowling 20.4 overs to snaffle 2/55. Great effort boys, a very strong season with plenty to look forward to in 2017/18. One Day As travelled to Coker Park to tackle Cannington in their semi final. Winning the toss and sending the home side in we made a fantastic start to have them at one stage 6 for 65 and really looking to roll them cheap. As is often the case there was one batsman who provided strong resistance who came in at number 7 and batted right through to the end of the innings compiling 85 and helping Cannington get to a total of 186. Best of the bowlers were Riggy 3/21, Baylo 2/21 & Sammy 2/30. Our run chase started off with a few early wickets which hurt us and only really got worse from there, 3 for 19 became 6 for 44 before Urby (33) and Dansol (29) tried valiantly to rectify the innings but couldn't get us there and we were dismissed for 123. A bitter pill to swallow for the A boys who had an inconsistent season but showed that their best was good enough to beat all others. The D train hosted Perth Tamil in another semi final and after losing the toss found themselves batting first for the 3rd week in a row. We got off to a good although slowish start as Tamil bowled to their field well and frustrated the batsmen. We lost Mike Irwin for 25 in the 16th over with the score on 51 after tweaking a hammy and having a runner for the latter part of his innings. 2 for 78 became 3 for 92 after S Marr (21) was stumped and a mini collapse saw us at 6 for 114 after 34 overs. Gav Poller came in at 8 and hit a quick 22 although also injuring himself this time his good calf (which required speedy Glatzy to run again) and with the help of Davros who batted well again helped us to a score of 156. Having runs on the board but missing a key bowler created mixed thoughts going out to defend but we were confident if we took our chances we would get there. A great run out by Davros (yessss Dave, now…) in the second over got the boys up and about as we tore through the batsmen, 3 for 10 turned into 6 for 34 and eventually rolling them for 65 in the 28th over. Jedi coming in and cleaning up again picking up 3 for 8 and Davros also grabbing 3 for 23. Great bowling and fielding performance which now sees the D train hosting Kenwick in next weeks grand final. The G bangers hosted Cockburn 1 in their semi and put in a dominant performance. Fielding first the Lions ripped through the batting line up to have them 4 for 13 thanks to a great opening spell from Sniffy 3 for 7 and captain Holmsey 2 for 22, not forgetting another superman catch in the slip cordon to young Kingy who repeated the dose from a few weeks earlier. Kenny Crook came in and grabbed 2 for 13 off his 7 and the visitors were dismissed for 81 in the 35th over. Not too many to chase for our boys but sometimes small totals can be tricky, but not this time with the Lions cruising to 6/85 with Jay Z top scoring with 29 and Yappa getting out after the score was achieved. Hurghhhh. Fantastic win by the boys who will now travel to Dick Lawrence oval and take on Kardinya in their quest for the flag, best of luck to both teams and all players involved this week.
